App redesign services exist for the app that works but underperforms. Maybe users drop off early, the ratings mention how confusing it is, the design looks dated next to competitors, or it simply no longer reflects your brand. A redesign fixes the experience, focusing on usability, retention and conversion, so the app does its job better rather than just looking newer. We redesign apps for Australian businesses, including ones we did not originally build, with the goal of lifting the numbers that matter.

This page explains when a redesign is worth it, how it differs from a technical upgrade, and how we approach it. If you would rather talk it through, get a free quote and we will reply within the hour.

Redesign or modernisation

These two get confused, and getting the distinction right saves you spending on the wrong thing. A redesign is about the experience: how the app looks and works for the people using it. A modernisation is about the technology underneath: upgrading old code and frameworks so the app runs well and is cheaper to maintain.

They often travel together, because an old app frequently has both a dated experience and dated technology, but they are different jobs solving different problems. If your app frustrates users, looks tired, or loses people who should be sticking around, you need a redesign. If it is slow, crashes, or is built on technology that is hard to maintain, you need modernisation. Part of our job early on is helping you work out which problem you actually have, so you do not pay to fix the wrong one.

The signs your app needs a redesign

The case for a redesign usually shows up in the numbers and the feedback rather than in a vague sense that the app looks old. Users dropping off in the first session, before they reach the value, is a strong signal. Ratings and reviews that mention confusion or frustration are another. A flood of support questions about things that should be obvious points straight at a design problem. And a design that visibly lags competitors quietly costs you, because users compare.

When several of these are present, a redesign is worth serious consideration. The key is that these are evidence, not opinion. A redesign driven by real signals of where users struggle is an investment with a target; a redesign driven by someone's taste is a gamble. We always start from the evidence.

Redesigning without alienating users

There is a real risk in redesigning an app that already has loyal users: change too much, too carelessly, and you frustrate the very people who liked it. Loyal users build habits, and moving everything around resets those habits and invites a backlash, often visible in a wave of one-star reviews after a redesign that prioritised newness over users.

We avoid that by being deliberate. We base changes on real evidence of what is not working rather than redesigning for its own sake. We keep the things users rely on, even if they are not the prettiest, because familiarity has value. And where a change is significant, we ease people into it rather than springing it on them. The aim is an app that existing users find better, not one they have to relearn for no clear gain.

Redesigning an app we did not build

You do not need to have built your app with us to have us redesign it, and many of our redesign projects are apps originally built elsewhere. We start by understanding the app as it is, where it underperforms, and what you are trying to achieve, then redesign the parts that will move the needle most.

We can work either way on delivery. We can hand a complete new design to your own developers to build, designed with how apps are actually built in mind so it is practical to implement. Or we can handle the build ourselves, through our app design and development service, so the new design carries cleanly from concept into a working app.

How a redesign works

A redesign is not just redrawing screens; it is a structured process aimed at fixing what is not working. We start by understanding the app as it stands and gathering the evidence: where users drop off, what the reviews and support tickets say, and how the app compares to what users now expect. That evidence tells us where the real problems are, which is often not where people assume.

From there we redesign the parts that matter most, usually starting with the points of greatest friction rather than spreading effort thinly across the whole app. We design the improved flows and screens, often as a clickable prototype so you and, where useful, real users can try the new experience before it is built. Then the redesign moves into development, and we test it against the goals we set at the start.

Working this way keeps a redesign honest. Every change traces back to a problem we identified and a goal we agreed, rather than to taste, so the finished redesign can be judged on whether it actually moved the numbers it was meant to. That discipline is what makes the difference between a redesign that pays for itself and one that just looks different.

A redesign with a target

The redesigns that pay off are the ones aimed at a specific outcome rather than a general refresh. Better retention, higher conversion, fewer support issues, stronger ratings: we agree upfront what we are trying to improve, so the redesign is measured against real goals rather than personal taste. That focus is what turns a redesign from a cosmetic exercise into a business decision with a return.

If your app works but is letting you down on the numbers that matter, a redesign focused on the right problems can change that. Tell us where your app is underperforming and what you want it to achieve, and we will send a free, fixed-price quote for a redesign aimed at those outcomes. If you are starting a design from scratch rather than fixing an existing one, our mobile app UI and UX design page is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

A redesign focuses on the experience, namely how the app looks and works for users. A modernisation focuses on the technology underneath, upgrading old code and frameworks. They often go together, but they are different jobs. If your app feels dated or underperforms with users, you need a redesign. If it is slow, fragile or built on old technology, you need modernisation. We help you tell which.
